The legacy of Ralph Mercado
Posted on 21. Mar, 2009 by Hector Aviles in Latino Music
A great influencer of latin music, particularly of the Salsa genre, has passed away, but his legacy remains. Mercado was a promoter, producer, and music enthusiast, that left his mark in New York City scene since the 70’s.
For me, Ralph Mercado’s biggest contribution was to pick up the slack of producing Salsa recordings when Fania went under. On doing that, he brought us great salsa artists like Marc Anthony, India, and others. He kept the salsa legends recording some fine albums, rode the crest of the Salsa Romantica wave, and put together an All-Stars to make various recordings, including the “Tribute to the Beatles” album, which is one of my favorites.
Ralph Mercado was a great entrepenuer that had a passion for latin music and found ways to take that music to the latin community, first in NYC, and then to the world.
He will be missed, but his legacy will live on!
Hector

Hola Michael,
Muchos saludos,
Hector
