LatinoWebCafe’s 2nd month
Posted on 08. May, 2009 by Hector Aviles in General
LatinoWebCafe celebrates its 2nd month and I’ve been thinking of all the things I’ve learned in my short bloggging life so far. Early on, I decided to make LatinoWebCafe.com a blog for latinos with a focus on three topics instead of just one topic. I want to share my passion and knowledge for latin music, share my business & career experience, and fill the blog with some sport events coments. My goal has been to give latinos (and others as well) a place to go to comment about these important aspects of our culture.
What I’ve learned so far
When I first started to consider going into the social networking thing, I was thinking more about podcasting (audio/video bloging if you may want to call it) than of (written) blogging. I am a bigger consumer of podcasts than I am of blogs, including twitter, which is technically micro-blogging. For example, I love podcasts because on my car I can hear and peak a little of the previous night’s TV news. I subscribe to NBC Nightly News and listen to it on my car the next morning on my way to work after I drop off my daughters at school. I find its a way to keep up with what is going on when you don’t have time to watch TV. I also subscribe to Latino USA, a great podcast by NPR’s Maria Hinojosa, Meet the Press and This Week with George Stephanopolous, ESPN Deportes podcast, and several others. Social networks expose you to the latest discussion topics, keep you connected to people that may be interested in what I have to say in my blog, and are a source of great feedback.
I wanted to do blogging and eventually complement it with podcasting as a way to share my knowledge and views on the things I’m most passionate about. These things are latin music, business & career, and sports. But with a very demanding full-time job at Microsoft as a Process Manager in our Product Launch Services team, its hard to make the time. As I said to my friends when I started this blog, I may be too aggressive in trying to cover 3 topics instead of concentrating in just one, as most bloggers do. But I believed there was a need for a blog that covered topics of interes to the hispanic community, and its hard to leave out any of the 3 topics. Music, business/career, and sports are woven into the fabric of our latino culture.
I’ve learned that it is hard to keep up the writing on all these 3 topics, and at the same time be a good employee in a very demanding job, and be a good father, husband, brother, son, and friend. Its very hard! But when you love what you do, you find a way to do it. I love writing, and I love the 3 topics I chose.
The road ahead
When I look at the work I’ve done this 2 months, I feel proud of the progress obtained. But I have a lot more to do. Going forward, I plan to take my blogging strategy to the next level. I’m not only using more social networking sites as a mean to market myself and this blog, but I also want to take my strategy for blogging one step further, so its more appealing to you the readers. I want to write more about music. When I started this blog, my idea was to write and comment about all sorts of latin music, not just salsa, although it is my favorite. I want to talk about Latin Jazz, Brazilian music, Mexican music, pop, reggaeton, trios, pop, and almost anything about latin music. I want to comment on my favorite recordings, provide recommendations, maybe establish a ”video Monday’s”, etc. I also want to share my knowledge on my areas of business expertise which are Process & Quality Improvement and Project Management. I have seen that not many people dominate these areas as I thought. And I also want to write my comments on latinos in sports.
When I look back now, I see that I have not scratched the surface on any of these areas. The percentage of writing on the 3 topics is close to what I had in mind when I began. But is feels its not eanough. So my plan is to re-assess my progress vs. objectives until now, and make the adjustments needed. I want to have days dedicated to latin music background, latin music artists and influencers, and comments on sport events which involve latinos.
Thank you!
Thanks for reading my posts and for your continued commitment to this blog. If you have a chance, please comment on what you would like me to write more about. Comment on what you like and what has not met your expectations. You can also subscribe to the blog via RSS feed or via Email, which will give you notifications when new content is published. Like a politician in Puerto Rico used to say in his re-election campaign slogan; “the best is yet to come”.
